Remodeling the 1/2 Bathroom

As you can see from the pictures, our little half bath was in desperate need of renovation.  It is about 4 foot wide by 8 foot long and contained a rusted out shower stall and a toilet.  The first task was to remove the shower stall.  Little did we know but the shower foundation was about 150 pounds and took a small army to move.  Next, we removed the green indoor/outdoor carpet (that’s right!) and the toilet.  We had to make several repairs to the floor surrounding the toilet and then we were able to reseat it. The walls were a nightmare!  One wall was solid brick, half of it was painted and the other half was not. The other three walls were pine paneling.  We were going to create a rustic look in the bathroom so we thought we might attempt to remove the paint from the brick but this proved to be an impossible task.  We looked into sandblasting but found that this was too messy.  After trying various paint removers that didn’t work, we decided to put a rustic looking wainscoting about halfway up the wall and texture-spackle the rest.  We painted the spackled portion tan and then sponge painted on a cream color that created a very old look.  After the walls were complete, we were able to lay new tile down on the floor.  (The previous owners of the house left us several crates of ceramic tile that worked beautifully.)  We applied wallpaper to the ceiling that looks like antique tin and we installed a rustic ceiling fixture.  Finally, we made a mirror out of an old screen door that we found in the basement and hung that on the main wall as you walk in.  It took about two months until we finished this project and the effect was great!
