Ask Mr. Bear Lapbook

We are using Before Five in a Row in our home school. This lapbook was created after our week of "rowing" Ask Mr. Bear.

The front features the cover of the book and is secured by two brads and string.

When you open it, the first thing you will notice is my son's "bear hug" which was made from his photo and his handprints joined by a humorously small body. He wrote "bear hug" on his shirt and decorated it with his name stickers.

On the left top flap is our bible verse and the bottom left flap has a pocket that says "How big is my hug?" Inside the pocket is a string that measures the distance of his stretched arms. You will notice that on the bottom of the main page is a ruler where he can measure the length of his "hug."

On the top right flap is a poem written by Shel Silverstein promoting a "hug o'war" rather than a "tug o'war." On the bottom right flap is a pocket with laminated cards featuring all the animals and their suggested gifts (hen, goose, goat, sheep, cow, bear and egg, pillow, cheese, blanket, milk and bear hug." I printed out images and let my son color them and cut them out. Then I laminated them for durability. Children can match the animal with their gift or use the cards for sequencing the story.

When you lift up the top center flap, their is a year calendar with our immediate family's birthdays highlighted and a list of names and dates on the left. The bottom is the story as re-told by son. We went through the pages of the book and he explained what was happening while I typed what he said. On the upper flap is our "woodlands habitat" study. I asked my son what types of things he would find in the woods and I printed out clip-art which he cut and glued on the page. The bottom features three matchbooks that read "What am I?" The fronts of the matchbooks have oak, maple and pine tree leaves and the insides have the appropriate seeds.
